9th Postgraduate Experimental Mechanics (PGEM) Workshop

Date/Time: 1 September 2025

Location: Imperial College London, UK.

Price: £80 inc VAT delegate fee

PGEM will take place the day before the BSSM's 19th International Conference on Advances in Experimental Mechanics - Imperial College London, UK
Delegates are welcome to attend both events

Time 11.00-16.30
Venue CAGB 300, Imperial College London, South Kensington, London, UK

Registration deadline 31 May 2025

The PGEM workshop will provide postgraduate students with a space to network, learn from experts through practical activities and gain inspiration from speakers with diverse career paths, including academia, industry, and entrepreneurship involved in the field of engineering measurement and experimental techniques in stress, strain and vibration analysis.

Highlights
Student 3 minute research elevator pitch. *
Technical, industrial, entrepreneurial presentations
Practical activities on strain measurements

* Please provide a Word/PDF file containing the project title and a 100-word summary. Instructions for the pitch event will be shared with the attendees closer to time.

Confirmed Speakers
Professor Jonathan Jeffers, Professor of Mechanical Engineering and the Associate Dean for Enterprise and co-director of Imperial's Institute for Deep Tech Entrepreneurship, Imperial College London.

The conference provides an excellent opportunity to share and discuss current research in a low pressure and relatively informal environment, learn about research projects at other institutions, network amongst like-minded people and make contacts for the future

Please follow the registration link above to submit your 3 minute research elevator pitch

The 3 min elevator pitch
Are you ready to showcase your research in just 180 seconds and with no more than 3 slides? This exciting challenge gives participants the opportunity to deliver a concise, engaging, and impactful presentation that highlights the essence of their research. It’s the perfect platform to spark interest, encourage discussions, and expand your network.
Don’t underestimate the power of three minutes—make every second count!

To submit:
1. Presentation Title
Keep it short and engaging - something that captures the essence of your research
2. Project Summary (100 words)
Provide a concise and engaging summary of your research. Focus on the key question or problem, your approach, and why it matters. Avoid jargon and aim for clarity to appeal to a broad audience.

Example:
How can we design composites to endure extreme humid environments?
Alex Liu, The University of Earth
Composite materials have revolutionised industries like aerospace, automotive, and marine thanks to their lightweight nature, corrosion resistance, and exceptional specific properties. However, prolonged exposure to humid environments can significantly degrade their performance over time. My PhD research focuses on developing novel experimental and computational techniques to predict these effects. By understanding and incorporating these insights into the design process, engineers can create safer, more durable structures that maintain their performance even under challenging environmental conditions.
